Days after the Belgians were asked to eat fries twice a week to support potato farmers in the country, it’s now the turn of the French. Citizens of France are now being asked to increase their intake of cheese to show their patriotism for the country.

In an attempt to save the country’s famous ‘fromage’ industry, dairy producers have collectively asked French citizens to consume more cheese and thereby show their patriotism to the country.According to a press release by France Terre de Lait, consumption of certain cheeses in the country has dropped by 60 percent. This fall in sales is largely attributed to the closure of supermarkets, restaurants and local cheese-mongers.Due to the lockdown, the French have only been buying essential goods instead of comfort foods like cheese. And as per the Telegraph, French citizens have been wary of buying over-the-counter cheese products due to fear of germs and hygiene standards.This has put the French cheese producers in a massive problem, with thousands of tons of cheese at risk of being thrown away. To combat this, a campaign has been launched in the country to encourage the French to increase their cheese consumption. Called ‘Fromagissons’, which means ‘Let’s act for cheese’, the campaign calls on consumers to eat cheese in solidarity with the cheese producers.

Apart from dairy and potato farmers, wine makers across Europe have also been distressed by the pandemic.A similar campaign has also been by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board in the United Kingdom in an attempt to aid the meat industry. Titled as the #steaknights campaign on social media, it urges British residents to eat more beef steak.
